Owning a car comes with its share of extra expenses, and it may turn out to be one of your largest expenditures on your monthly budget. However, there are several ways you can adapt to save on your car expenses. It is common knowledge that the more cost-saving measures you adopt in your budget, the more money you will save. Here are some the tips you can use to save money on your car expenses.

Don't part-exchange too soon

You should try to keep your car for longer instead of part-exchanging for an upgrade within the first 12-18 months. The cost of new vehicles rises each year, and on the other hand, the value of your car tends to depreciate quickly. This means that if you part-exchange often, you end up losing money on low trade-in values. The secret is buying a high-quality car and trying to keep it for an extended period. You should try to keep your car for at least 3 to 5 years.

Change the car oil yourself

Changing the motor oil shouldn't be something difficult to do. Once you purchase the right oil, proceed and do some research about how you can replace the car oil yourself. YouTube is a great place you can run to for reference. Watch several videos, and you will be good to go. Alternatively, you can ask friends and family members who could teach you how to do it. Just be sure to follow any recommended safety precautions while doing it.

Clean your car battery

Both cold and hot temperatures have adverse effects on your car battery. The cold winter temperatures can reduce the power of your vehicle by 50 percent while the summer heat has negative effects on the internal working mechanism of the battery. To minimize the effects of the adverse weather conditions, be sure to clean any corrosion from the terminals with a mixture of water and baking soda. Use a small brush for cleaning. After cleaning the terminals, tighten all the cable connections. In case your battery is more than three years old, take it for testing. Keeping your battery in good condition saves you the burden of having to purchase a new one.

Check your car's air filter every month

A dirty filter can have devastating effects on your engine. It can reduce its lifespan and increase your fuel consumption. Cleaning the filter shouldn't take you a lot of time. You can clean it by removing it and blowing it with an air hose. If the filter is too dirty, consider replacing it.
