Learner drivers will soon have access to the motorway following a new UK traffic rule which will see them access the roads which have been closed for almost 60 years. This move will allow learner drivers to take thier driving lessons on these roads after road safety groups lamented of how the inital set rules did not mind exposing learner drivers to roads which posed as a safety concern. Motorways are the safest roads for learners to practice their skills on.

Application of the Rule on Motorways

Starting next year, 2018, learner drivers will be allowed to drive on motorways if they have a qualified driver assisting them on a dual-control car. This rule is meant solely for car learner drivers with an exemption of motorbikes and will apply on motorways in Wales, England and Scotland.

Why this Law?

According to Chris Grayling, the transport secretary, lack of driving experience is a crucial factor that has seen many young drivers die or get injured in road accidents, a number which is greater than drivers who are over 25. Government figures indicate that only about 3% of learner drivers take the six-hour post-pas Pass Plus course which teaches learners on how to drive on motorways. This law will, therefore, expose learner drivers to a supportive environment where they can develop practical skills on the safety measures to take while on the driveway.

Benefit to Learner Drivers

Jasmine Halstead, British School of Motoring head of learning and development said that allowing learner drivers on the motorways under supervision will expose them to these roads and prevent them from avoiding them. He also said that the drivers will be able to use the roads in the right way after passing the driving tests and boost their confidence in driving in these busiest and fastest roads by themselves.
